Gunpey is a new kind of musical puzzle game where you flip lines and flip the music. In this one-of-a-kind puzzle experience, your objective is to flip the lines, located in squares, to connect them over five columns. Connecting lines from left to right remove the connected row. If an incomplete line reaches the top of the screen, the game is over. Gunpey will test your reflexes, stretch your mind and dazzle your senses. With 40 varied backgrounds and stylized music, and two-player multiplayer over wireless ad-hoc connectivity, this puzzle title is the game to pick up.

Lumines > Gunpey,
Where to begin. The fact that nobody else has bothered to review this game is a hint to it’s disappointment. Not only is it difficult to find a FAQ or walkthrough, I can’t even find any information on unlocking all the skins. So I will give a fair breakdown of this game.
1) Lumines time trial mode was designed smart enough to allow the user to retry after completing or failing a time trial attempt. Gunpey however, forces the user to leave after every time trial attempt, which requires loading, and then reselect time trial mode only to wait for it to reload. One sixty second attempt can take nearly two minutes. I consider this a failure. How can a puzzle game, a “mind game” if you will, expect so much of its users when clearly the design team failed to use their brains when planning the game?
2) There are five columns. To complete a break the user must make a horizontal line one end of the screen to the other. However, the game designers did not feel it necessary to even out the pieces across all the columns. I believe there are something like ten rows. Imagine one column neglected to the extent you have 8 pieces in two or three of the rows waiting for that one piece in the blank column to complete a break. Some may have you believe this is where the game gets difficult, I say it is where the game lacks. Once that pieces arrives in the otherwise empty column you must race it up to the top to complete your break and hope that another piece comes from that starving column or you will no doubt be in the same predicament as one piece is not going to allow you to deplete the over stuffed columns. Also, in time trial mode, the user shouldn’t have to worry about neglected columns, this is a time trial for gosh sakes! That would be like randomly not having a piece in Lumines time trial. It just doesn’t work.
3) Another issue with this game is control. I hear the DS version is better but I am not interested in wasting anymore money on a game that was so poorly planned in the first place. People who bought this game should get a coupon to reduce the price on the DS version if it really works that much better. Anyways, yah the controls lag behind to the extent if you are not paying attention you will screw everything up simply because you moved too fast for the game. I can’t believe I can move too fast for a computer but apparently it can happen.
I’ve compared this game to Lumines for one reason. It was released by Q Entertainment, the same group that brought you Lumines. Secondly I consider Lumines to be the bar, the measuring stick for puzzle games. Also, I believe most puzzle enthusiasts know Lumines and gunpey is also a dance track driven game.
I love puzzle games, and I generally beat them in a week or less. I rolled Lumines in a day or two. In Kirby’s Avalanche I could go for hours without things reaching the top. I could go on, but my intent is not to hype up my puzzle game prowess, it is to build ethos, credibility. I am simply stating that I know puzzle games and I am not whining. I truly find this game deficient and obviously I am not the only one considering I can’t find a gunpey fan sight anywhere online. This game is not a complete loser but if you are the average gamer, understand you will NOT unlock even half of the skins on this game. It is much tougher than anything else I ever played in the way of the puzzle genre. I hope this review helps.
